Understanding Sedation

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures.

Despite the common nickname, patients are generally awake during many forms of dental sedation. General anesthesia is different because the patient is completely unconscious.

At Baltimore Implant Center, our goal is to help make necessary dental care more accessible for patients who experience apprehension, anxiety or other challenges receiving treatment.

Sedation Is Available

Dental Anxiety Shouldn't Keep You From Needed Care

Patients throughout Baltimore and surrounding areas deserve access to dental treatment that supports their oral health and overall wellbeing. For appropriate patients, sedation may help reduce the apprehension surrounding dental treatment.

Concerned about an upcoming appointment? Discuss your anxiety, sensitivity, gag reflex, previous dental experiences and treatment needs with the dental team.
Levels of Sedation

Sedation Can Range From Light Relaxation to General Anesthesia

The appropriate type and level of sedation depend on the patient, procedure and clinical circumstances.

01

Minimal Sedation

You remain awake but relaxed during treatment.

02

Moderate Sedation

Formerly called conscious sedation. You may become deeply relaxed and may remember little of the procedure.

03

Deep Sedation

You are near the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.

04

General Anesthesia

You are completely unconscious during the procedure.

A More Comfortable Dental Experience

Talk With Us About Your Dental Anxiety

No two patients experience dental treatment the same way. If you have avoided care because of anxiety, sensitivity, a strong gag reflex or a difficult previous dental experience, tell us.

Our team can discuss your concerns, your planned procedure and whether a sedation option may be appropriate for your individual situation.

Personalized Treatment

Your Comfort Plan Begins With a Conversation

Sedation is not a one-size-fits-all service. Your dentist can review your health information, treatment needs and concerns before determining an appropriate approach.

1

Tell Us Your Concerns

Share dental anxiety, sensitivity, previous experiences, medications and any difficulty becoming numb.

2

Review Your Treatment

The dental team can consider the planned procedure, treatment length and your individual comfort needs.

3

Discuss Appropriate Options

When appropriate, your dentist can explain sedation options, preparation and what you should expect.
